Three illegal camps in area
LOCAL councillors and residents have reacted angrily after three separate groups of Travellers pitched illegal camps in Ellon and the surrounding district.
Less than a month after the last group left Balmacassie Industrial Estate - and £700 worth of rubbish the council was forced to clean - a new group has pitched up at nearly the same spot, prompting more complaints about litter.
One dog walker told the Times: “It’s their life, but these camps are costing taxpayers thousands to clean up. The place is an absolute mess.
There are black bags, and the woodland area is full of litter. It’s disgraceful.”
Meanwhile, at Sands of Forvie nature reserve, another group has occupied the car park meant for tourists and visitors, and at Ellon Golf Course, yet another party has been resident for more than a week. These sites appear to be kept in comparatively good order.
Cllr Isobel Davidson told the Times: “The Travellers at Balmacassie and Knockothie have caused considerable concern among the nearby residents because of antisocial behaviour. I hope this encampment can respect local people. I have written to the landowner asking them to take steps to secure these open areas of land but realise that there is no simple solution.”
