Tower repairs nearly complete
Methlick minister the Rev Matt Canlis and the Save Our Tower Sign, which has become a focal point in the village.
THE finishing touches are due to be applied next week to a project involving repairs to the North-east’s oldest church.
It will mark the completion of work on the tower at Methlick Parish Church, which has involved a major fundraising drive.
Worshippers received the best festive news when Methlick minister, the Rev Matt Canlis, announced at the Christmas Eve service that they had reached their target of £35,000.
Around £8,500 was raised at a free hog roast fundraiser in the village’s Beaton Hall late last year and by Christmas Eve morning the total had reached £31,000.
Every home in the village received an invitation to the hog roast, with people being invited to bring along or send a donation in a special envelope.
Mr Canlis told the Times: “We hoped to announce at the service that we had raised the £35,000 and on Christmas Eve morning we stood at £31,000.
“By the afternoon we had received another £4,000, so everyone was delighted.
“Work on the tower is almost complete and someone is due to come in next week to take care of the finishing touches. It has been a great effort by everyone in the community.”
A three-year timescale had originally been drawn up to raise the money for the tower repairs.
Work had already been completed on a new church roof and pointing, and the final stages of the repairs involved the elimination of all fresh dry rot outbreaks.
