Traditional skills at Fyvie

FYVIE Castle will host a course next week honing the age-old skill of using lime mortar.

The Scottish Traditional Skills Training Centre is organising two days of instruction on Thursday and Friday.

The hands-on event will cover the theory and practical use of lime, as opposed to cement-based mortars, in the conservation, repair and maintenance of traditional buildings, walls and other stone-built structures.

The course is aimed at construction industry professionals. architects, private individuals and those involved in conservation and regeneration projects.

It focuses on the techniques involved in mixing and applying lime mortars, as well as the correct use of tools and materials.

The centre’s executive director, Marc Ellington, said: “These courses are extremely popular and we get people from all over the area.

“They are absolutely critical in keeping alive these traditional skills. We also run drystone walling courses and it’s amazing what people can learn in a couple of days.”

Next week’s course will run from 9.30am until 4.30pm.

It will be led by Hans Norling and Andy Newcombe, both master craftsmen. During the last 17 years they have been involved in project managing and leading teams of specialist masons working on major building, conservation, repair and maintenance projects throughout Scotland.
