Webster to appeal sentence
Malcolm Webster, who was jailed for murdering his wife in a staged car crash in Aberdeenshire, has been given leave to appeal against his sentence. However, his bid to appeal against his conviction has been rejected.
Former nurse Webster, 52, was jailed by Lord Bannatyne for a minimum of 30 years last year at the High Court in Edinburgh for the 1994 murder of his wife Claire Morris, which he committed as part of a scheme to claim life assurance proceeds. It’s understood that he intends to mount a further bid to overturn his conviction.
Mr Webster was convicted after a jury heard how he drugged his wife before staging a road accident at Kingoodie on the Auchenhuive to Tarves Road and setting fire to the vehicle with her inside. His conviction for murder came after the crash was re-investigated, and following what was the longest murder trial against a single accused in Scottish legal history.
Mr Webster, who was described during his trial as a “cruel, practised deceiver”, continues to deny responsibility, maintaining that Ms Morris’ death was a tragic accident. He has also been convicted of an attempt to murder his second wife, Felicity Drum, in New Zealand in 1999.
Mr Webster is currently engaged in a legal battle with Aberdeenshire Council over the rights to Ms Morris’ lair, which is located in Tarves Cemetery. The headstone was removed by Aberdeenshire Council at the request of Ms Morris’ family following Mr Webster’s conviction.
