A POTENTIAL wedding day disaster was alleviated recently when an ‘angel’ saved the day after a bridesmaid’s dress split open.
While Oldmeldrum bride, Laura Thoms remained “really calm”, there was a sense of panic after bridesmaid, Emma, bent down, and her dress burst open, just 40 minutes before the ceremony.
Laura explained: “One of the other bridesmaids kept Emma’s glass topped up with champagne, but I was ridiculously calm.
“Someone put safety pins in the dress to hold it all together, and the plan was to cover it with a pashmina. Meanwhile Julie from the spa phoned her mum, who knew a seamstress called Liz.”
It was pure luck that Julie’s mother could lay her hands on the phone number of local seamstress, Liz Cork.
Mother of the bride, Paula said: “Liz appeared and she sewed Emma back into her dress.
“It could have been a complete disaster, but our ‘angel’ appeared and saved the day.”
Liz said: “I got a phone call one Friday lunchtime and was told that the zip had burst on the bridesmaid’s dress at Nether Blackhall. They phoned about 1.20pm and the wedding was at 2pm, but luckily I was in the area.
“I jumped in the car with my needle and thread, pins and scissors and just sewed her into the dress. It took me about 20-25 minutes.”
The wedding was delayed by about 40 minutes. Paula went on ahead to alert her future son-in-law, and, she said “to keep him out of the pub”.
She concluded: “I would like to say a huge thank you to Liz, she really did save the day.”
