Rules around the collection of waste from wheeled bins around Aberdeenshire have changed.
Efforts to increase recycling means only waste which is placed in one 240-litre bin will be collected fortnightly from households. Waste presented outside the bin or which causes the bin lid not to close will no longer be picked up.
Households with a genuine need for a second wheeled bin, however, may be allowed additional capacity.
For those who are struggling to contain their non-recyclable waste in their bin, or who are having difficulty recycling, help and advice is available at Wasteline on 0845 600 3 900, or visit www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/waste.
Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee, Peter Argyle, said: “We would like to thank the majority of households for their efforts to recycle and reduce waste; they will probably notice no change to their service.
“For those who take advantage of our recycling facilities, from the kerbside and at Recycling Points and HWRCs, fitting their household waste into a standard bin for a fortnightly collection should be straightforward.
“It is only fair to those households who can manage that we ask others who have not previously made efforts to reduce their waste to start to do so.
“We have to work together to achieve our targets and we will continue to try to make it easier to minimise the impact every household has on the environment by offering as many recycling opportunities as possible, while maintaining tight control of a reduced budget.”
ISC vice chair Jill Webster said: “Consistent application of the policy is fair to all and recognises that both the Council and householders have an obligation to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill.
“Recycling is a much more effective use of resources and plays a key part in achieving both the council and the Scottish Government’s aims of increasing recycling and reducing waste to landfill or other disposal methods.”
The council has a network of Household Waste and Recycling Centres throughout the area which can accept a huge range of materials and goods for recycling.
