ABERDEENSHIRE Council’s Conservative Group has chosen Mid-Formartine councillor Jim Gifford to take over as their Group Leader.

Councillor Gifford was elected unanimously by the Conservative Group. He takes over from Deputy Provost Councillor Humphrey, who has led the group since 1999.

Cllr Gifford said he was “honoured” to have been chosen by his fellow Conservative Councillors, and credited Councillor Humphrey with having taught him a great deal. “He has been in local government for over 40 years and I know that I will have my work cut out to adequately follow him”, he said.

“With our budget setting meeting only a few weeks away and the council elections in May, it is an exciting time to take over this role and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead.”

Councillor Humphrey explained that he had decided to step down as Group Leader after deciding not to seek re-election in May.

“We decided on this early change of leadership in order to give Jim a decent period of transition before the election in May”, he said. “I obviously wish Jim all the very best of luck in his new role and look forward to helping him settle into the job over the coming months.”
