Ellon Academy pupils have given their support to local Rotary fundraising efforts for the Nepal earthquake victims.

S1, 2 and 3 raised £500 through collections and school staff backed them by selling cakes in the staff centre at morning breaks.

A cheque was presented by pupil senate members to Audrey Gartly, on behalf of Ellon Rotary Club, at the academy on Monday.

Currently, only S1-3 pupils are in school with senior groups on study leave for SQA examinations.

Depute head teacher Kim Hall said: “Our pupils did us proud as always by raising over £500.

“Our S1, S2 and S3 pupils all heard about what had happened in Nepal at their assemblies.

“We are delighted to help Ellon Rotary raise money for such a worthwhile cause and we are very proud of our pupils’ generosity.

“Ellon Academy pupils and staff would encourage everyone to donate whatever they can to help the victims in Nepal.”

Mrs Hall added that Ellon Rotary Club had supported the school over many years through various activities and now it was their turn to fundraise.

Audrey, who is the club’s acting international convener, said: “This is a great effort from everyone at the school and is a real boost for our local fundraising for Nepal.”

Meanwhile, Ellon Rotarians hosted a Big Band concert in the Victoria Hall on Saturday night which also shared donations with the Nepal disaster.

A recent Rotary collection at Costcutter raised more than £500. Rotarians are involved in efforts in Ellon and the surrounding area to raise money for the stricken country.
