The 2012 Ellon Pedal Car Race was formally brought to a close with a presentation of a cheque for £6000 by the Ellon Rotary Club to Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal at the club’s meeting on Wednesday.

The donation came from profits of the event, which the Rotary Club took over responsibility for last year. Representatives of the Club handed over the cheque at the meeting at the Station Hotel.

The Monty’s Maggie Appeal, launched by championship golfer Colin Montgomery in memory of his mother Elizabeth, raises funds to construct a new centre at Foresterhill in Aberdeen for those living with and affected by cancer in the north east.

The charity’s aim is to raise £3 million to achieve this goal, and construction work has already begun on the new centre. The Pedalcar Race, which now enters its fourth year, involves a series of closed road cycle races around a town centre circuit followed by sixteen pedal car teams participating in an hour long race.

In addition, numerous stalls and other attractions were on hand at the 2012 event to occupy the estimated two thousand spectators who turned out to watch the race.

The John Clark Motor Group were the main sponsors of the 2012 event, which also saw sponsorship from numerous local and north-east based businesses.

Ellon Rotarian Mike Watson, who chaired the Race Committee, said: “The whole event was a huge success and one which was a great spectator attraction. We hope to build on this success and make it a fixture in the events diary for the north-east.

“While the presentation of the cheque of £6000, which was the total amount of monies raised, brings a closure to the 2012 event, it actually launches the organisation of this year’s race which will take place on Sunday, August 25.”

Nicola Watson, who accepted the donation on behalf of Maggie’s Aberdeen, stated: “I am delighted The Pedal Car Race Committee elected to support Maggie’s.

“The race day was great fun for everyone concerned.”

The Rotary Club of Ellon are extremely keen to speak to local businesses interested in sponsoring the 2013 Pedalcar event. Anyone who is interested in either sponsoring the Pedal Car Race, or entering a team to the competition, should contact for more information.
