The council tax in Aberdeenshire is to increase by 2.5%.

Councillors narrowly voted in favour of the rise after two hours of discussion.

At today’s full council meeting, the SNP-led administration’s budget was passed by 33 votes to 32.

An alternative budget put forward by the authority’s opposition was unsuccessful.

Aberdeenshire had to find £24million in savings in the coming financial year.

Following a Scottish budget deal struck between the SNP and Greens last week, the council is set to receive an additional £8million of funding.
