An Ellon volunteer has been recognised for her efforts at a charity shop in the town.
Fiona Jones, 23, received her certificate of retail skills through her volunteering at The British Red Cross shop in Ellon.
Fiona achieved the award by compiling a booklet on the charity ranging from sections on stock to window displays.
She told the Times: “I am really happy because I have been working towards the certificate for a year.
“I really enjoy meeting new people, the challenges it has, no week is the same and it is always varied.
“My favourite task is putting the books into the shelves and dealing with the customers.”
Fiona who has spent over one year volunteering in the shop also completed the certificate as part of her Duke of Edinburgh silver award
Part of the project included finding out about the background of the charity and the work that they do.
She added: “It was quite hard to find out more about the charity because I am quite a sensitive person.
“I had to go through health and safety and practice every week and now I can work on the till.”
When she is not volunteering she enjoys spending time horse riding.
Fiona who has autism said she wanted to prove that she could achieve the award just like everyone else.
She said: “Most people with learning difficulties find it harder to complete things.
“A lot of young people have achieved it and I wanted to too - I didn’t want to let my disability hold me back.
“I prefer for things to stay the same - I don’t like change but I really like working with the public. I love the challenge of working towards the awards.”
Fiona revealed that volunteering has also opened up opportunities for her to meet new people.
She added: “I think volunteering and achieving the award strengthens you and makes you feel like you are getting recognition for your hard work. It creates other contacts as well.”
Fiona’s also enjoys working on a magazine on Thursdays, walking dogs with Shared Live and has recently starting working towards the Youth Achievement awards.
