It the latest in a series of Aberdeenshire Council roads projects in recent months which have led to restrictions on traffic movement in and around the town.
Later this month part of Station Road will be shut for resurfacing work. The council’s head of roads and landscape services, Philip McKay, said: “A new asphalt surface is to be laid on Bridge Street. This will provide a durable road surface, which should mean we do not need to return to this area for quite a number of years.
“Unfortunately, to safely carry out resurfacing work in this area, a road closure is necessary.
“Northbound traffic will be diverted via the Park and Ride, however south bound traffic will have a much shorter diversion to take.
“Aberdeenshire Council apologises for any short term inconvenience that these works may cause.”
Ellon and District Councillor Gillian Owen said she hoped everyone would have patience while the work is carried out. She added: “Bridge Street was in dire need of attention. A number of residents and Ellon Community Council members had made representations to me about it. I took this to officers and was delighted to see it included in the current budget.
“I understand it will have an effect on residents and business alike but it is crucial works and the council have started this in the holidays.
“I hope everyone has patience and forbearance as the work progresses over the next few days.”
A spokesman for Ellon Traders Association said: “The best time for disruption is when our premises are closed. But if the work needs to be done and the budget is there, we hope for plenty of notice, for pedestrian access to the street to be maintained, for diversions to be clear and for the work to be done as quickly and quietly as possibly.”
Meanwhile, Station Road will be closed from July 20-31 to allow for resurfacing. Notices will be put up advising of diversions.
