Work recently began to install a cinema quality projector within Ellon’s Cinema in Victoria Hall.

The cinema is run by volunteers and the film is currently delivered by Film Mobile Scotland when they tour the North-East of Scotland.

Once the projector is in place there will really be no limits to its use for the community

Victoria Hall volunteers hope that with the installation of their own projector the cinema will be able to expand in their delivery of cinema services to their audiences.

Local joiner, Alan Shand, and plasterer, Alan Donaldson, worked hard to create an acoustic enclosure to house the projector and the ancillary equipment in the balcony.

Victoria Hall Committee Secretary, Keith Hart, said: “Features for the acoustic enclosure include it being vented to allow for cooling and there are two web links to allow remote monitoring.

“In theory the projector can be operated remotely so I can be in my office and check on it.

“The web links will also provide condition monitoring of the projector so that we can check on its health.”

Both Keith and his wife Liz have been tackling the painting required for the cinema.

Keith has tried to source many of the materials locally.

The carpets have been sourced from Frasers of Ellon and the paint from Lawrence Milne Decorators in Ellon.

Funding for the projector was obtained through grants from Creative Scotland, Awards For All and the Ellon Cinema itself.

The work to install the new projector is expected to be completed this month.

The first screening with the new projector will be the film Minions on Sunday, August 30 at 10.30am.

There will be a special price of £2 per ticket available at the door on that Sunday.

The regular cinema days and times will resume on the following Sunday, September 6, with the screening of Inside Out at 3pm and Boychoir at 6pm.

Chairperson of the Management Committee for the Hall, Vicki Morgan, said: “Everyone involved has dedicated so much of their own time to providing a cinema for the community.

“Once the projector is in place there will really be no limits to its use for the community. A new chapter for the Victoria Hall is just beginning.”
