Winter arrives in North-east

SNOW and plunging temperatures hit the North-east this week with the first wintry blast of the New Year.

The recent mild spell was suddenly replaced by chilly daytime temperatures and overnight readings which plummeted well below freezing in some parts of the region, with sheltered areas expected to record as low as minus 12C.

Monday’s snowfall was followed by the big freeze and council gritting teams were working round the clock to combat the treacherous conditions.
