This year’s Meldrum Academy Young Musician of the Year competition kicked off in style when John McLaughlin entertained the crowds as he played Vals on the guitar.

Then 17 other young musicians from Oldmeldrum and the surrounding areas took to the stage.

Organised by Oldmeldrum Rotary Club and Meldrum Academy Performing Arts Department, the annual event welcomes both new and previous competitors.

The judges - music Instructors Pamela Cook and Douglas Watt - were faced with the very difficult task of judging four different age groups as well
as choosing the most promising musician and overall
winner.

The winner from the Primary 1–4 category went to John McLaughlin, while
Sophie Jackson from Tarves won the P5–7 section.

The S1-3 category winner was Christopher Smith from Udny who was last year’s overall winner.

In the same age group, Most Promising Young Musician went to Ruaraidh Williams.

Jessica Hay from Pitmedden won both the S4–6
age group of Most Promising Young Musician and Young Musician of the Year overall.

She will now go on to represent Oldmeldrum Rotary Club at the District Heat in Perth next year.

The judges were thanked for their time and the effort they made in giving the musicians some very constructive feedback.

The evening ended with a well-deserved show of appreciation from the audience who had obviously enjoyed listening to the musical talents of some of our local young people.
