After the disappointment of the previous weekend when they were unable to field a side Ellon Gordon’s 2nd XI were hopeful, although a week late , of starting the 2011 campaign with a win against the newly combined 2nd Xi of Queens Cross/ Stoneywood Dyce at the Gordon Park last Saturday.
On loosing the toss Ellon were sent into bat on a damp wicket due to overnight rain - the first for quite a few weeks but then the cricket season has started. Openers Montgomery and Murray began cautiously against the bowling of Raynor and Barron only for Murray to be brilliantly caught by Moir with a diving catch at first slip. Montgomery followed soon after caught at second slip.
Ally Stallard then joined Hutcheson at the crease and they successfully dealt with the openers adding 20 runs bringing about the first change in the bowling and what a change that turned out to be. QCSD introduced Alfridi into the attack and with his third ball he had Stallard out stumped. But worse was to follow in his third over when first he bowled Hutcheson with a ball that almost turned at right angles and virtually impossible to play followed by one that bowled Owen off his elbow.
Therefore half the Ellon side were out with only 42 on the board. Moir was then brought into the attack and in his first two overs he had Gardner stumped and Meikle lbw.Tom Stallard, playing his first ever game of cricket, put up some resistance for a time before he was also out lbw this time to Alfridi. It was then left to Hede to add some respectability to the score with a not out knock of 23 while loosing Sandham and Bruce both to stumpings by another QCSD youngster Almamun behind the stumps.
So two balls into the 29th over Ellon were all out for 91 - a better score than what looked to be on the cards at one stage. Thanks to the bowling of 12 year old Alfridi, with 5 for 17 in 7 overs, Ellon were out for a much lower score than they had hoped for.

After the customary tea interval for the foodstuffs provided by the Station Hotel Ellon‘s task was clear they had to try and bowl the opposition out. Danger man for the visitors was opening bat Moir or so Ellon thought.
Ellon opened their attack with Hede and Hutcheson and for the first few overs they kept the batsmen quiet and even made an early breakthrough when Hutcheson caught Ritchie at cover. The prize wicket, however, was the next one when A.Stallard held a skier off Moir at deep mid off. With the fall of this wicket Ellon’s hopes of making in roads into the opposition batting were high until they realised the not out batsman at that stage was the experienced Mathew Cohen and it was he who turned the game well and truely in QCSD’s favour with a not out knock of 41. He did loose Rayner and Heyman along the way but they both had stayed around long enough for Cohen to whittle away at the Ellon total.
The winning four was scored off the fourth ball of the 30th over to give QCSD a convincing 6 wicket victory.
Ellon’s most successful bowler was Hutcheson with 2 for 25 but he was helped along the way by fellow opener Hede who conceded only 5 runs in his first 7 overs that included one wicket.
So a poor batting display against some extrordinary bowling, especially by young Alfridi, proved to be Ellon’s downfall. It will be interesting to see how the other sides in the Grade cope with Alfridi if he bowls in a similar manner again.

Ellon are home again this week end when they entertain 2nd Gordonians and a better alround performance will be required if they expect to secure their first victiory of the season. First team game v Stonehaven was washed out after 10 overs of the second innings.
