LOCAL sporting achievement was recognised at Aberdeenshire Sports Council sports awards evening.

The event, attended by more than 150 people, was held last Friday (March 23) at Garioch Sports Centre.

The awards ceremony rewards and acknowledges local people for their commitment to, and achievement in, sport during 2011.

More than 60 nominations were received for this year’s awards and all received a certificate to recognise their contribution to sport.

Mike Avis, of Ellon Rugby Club, picked up the coach of the year award. He is the club’s head coach and youth development officer. Ellon Rugby under 16s received the team of the year accolade,

Colin Allanach, of Ythan Cycling Club, received the service to sport award. He is club president and training to become club coach and race organiser.

Organisers said in this an Olympic year it was an ideal opportunity for clubs and other organisations to recognise sports talent in their midst, to give local sports people and volunteers the acknowledgement they deserve, and also to show the wealth of sporting talent in Aberdeenshire.
