Last Week saw Ythan CC host the annual Massie Shield 25 mile time trial on the testing Ellon to New Deer to Ellon course.
The Massie Shield is a team competition with riders from each club being grouped in teams of three and the fastest aggregate time securing overall victory.
The afternoons balmy conditions had cooled before the first rider headed out at 7pm and a westerly breeze on the outward leg was to provide a further test to the riders on a course which includes several climbs and technical corners.
Ythan fielded several teams but it was Aberdeen Wheelers who secured victory with their lead rider Simon Van Bellen also winning the individual event ahead of teammate Lee Smith and Ythan’s Colin Duncan. Ythan juniors Jordan Stronach and Hamish Cooper produced strong performances to secure first and second juniors respectively.
This weekend sees the Aberdeen Wheelers 10 mile time trial at Drumoak on the fast North Deeside/South Deeside Road course.
Ythan CC’s resident triathlete David Horne represented Great Britain (Age Group M40-44) at the recent 2014 ETU Triathlon European Championships. Held in the Austrian town of Kitzbuhel, the European Championships provide four days of non-stop triathlon action across both Sprint and Olympic Distance. Over 1650 age group athletes took part over the weekend with torrential downpours and a drop in temperature all adding to the sense of drama for the start of the sprint races.
Horne delivered a solid performance to make the Top 10 by finishing 8th in the Sprint AG 40-44 and also crossed the line as the second placed Team GB athlete – only 5 seconds behind fellow Team GB athlete Mark Young who finished 5th. As a top three Team GB finisher Horne gained automatic selection to represent the GB Age Group Team at next years European Triathlon Championships in Geneva, Switzerland.
