Ellon AFC took on Lads Club at Woodside in a Division 1 North encounter. With the opposition below them in the league it was important to get a victory and stretch the advantage.
Barrett set up a great chance for Bain after just 5 minutes as he battled bravely with two defenders but with the goal beckoning Bain could only hit a weak effort at the keeper.
A couple of minutes later Ellon lost centre half Laird after a clash of heads with Calder. This gave the experienced Taylor most of the game to prove to manager Booth that he still has something to offer.
Ellon were pressing for the opener and a cross by Hamilton was cleverly dummied by Bain leaving Robertson with a chance but his shot was well saved by keeper Deans.
Good interplay between Irvine, Shaw and Hamilton saw the latter hit a weak effort past.
The visitors did not have to wait long to get ahead as Bain struck after 18 minutes after a good ball from Robertson allowed the striker to evade the challenge from McNeil and sidefoot home.
Two minutes later and their advantage was doubled as a weak clearance by Deans was met on the volley almost 40 yards out by Longmuir and the ball sailed into the net for a wonder goal by the winger.
5 minutes later and it was three to Ellon. Anderson played a high ball up to Bain who flicked on to Barrett. He gathered possession and outpaced two defenders before slotting past Deans.
Lads Club’s Lowe was booked for simulation as they looked for any way back into the game. They did have a chance when Calder broke clear of a square Ellon defence but Morris was on hand to block the attacker’s effort.
The half ended with Robertson sending a free kick over from 20 yards after a foul by Wright.
Half time 3-0 Ellon
Ellon started the second period brightly and a Bain cross was touched on by Shaw to Hamilton who tried an audacious overhead which flew over.
Lads Club continued to battle and Ramsay and Lowe both had efforts saved by Morris as the home side served notice that they had not given up hope of getting something out of the game.
But their chances appeared slim when a great ball by Barrett found Bain and as he ran towards the box he was unceremoniously hacked down by McNeil who got his marching orders after 19 minutes of the half.
Ellon were forced to make a change at left back as an injury to Anderson meant he was replaced by Grant Morrison.
The dangerous Gillies then had a great chance cleared off the line by Shaw as the homesters continued the fight.
With 20 minutes Sutherland replaced Hamilton. And almost instantly Bisset had a shot saved by Morris.
McHattie was the next to make a chance as he broke through and set up Calder but Taylor was on hand to clear off the line.
MacNeill replaced Bain with 10 left and the substitution bore fruit almost instantly as the powerful striker was fed by Barrett and he used his strength to force his way past three defenders and walk the ball into the net
Final Score 4-0 Ellon
Man of match
Ellon – Mark Urquhart
Lads Club – Ryan Gillies
In the end 3 points were achieved but Ellon were certainly dragged down to the level of the opposition and performance levels were way below what has become expected. Although the game was put to bed in the first half the second half display against 10 men was not good. This victory lifts Ellon up to fifth place but in a tight league the winning mentality will need to be maintained.
Ellon’s next game will be away to Glendale on the 8th September at Maryculter. Kick off will be 14:00.
