Colony Locos met Broomhill Juniors in Round One of the Sunnybank Shiield and the game started at a decent tempo with both sides creating half chances but nothing clear cut.
Broomhill tried to lay the ball out from the bank and Locos had a game plan to press high which was working well. A nasty kick in the mouth on Littlejohn when he bravely prevented a certain goal by heading clear and taking a whack for good measure left him dazed and had to be replaced by McDonald. Locos took the lead in approx 25mins when a clever ball down the left channel from Hay to WOODGREAVES who beat two defenders, drew the keeper and lashed high into the net from six yards.
Broomhill equalised within 10minutes when the central midfield stood off and allowed a juniors player to pick out his man at the back past to collect the ball and drill past Douglas unchallenged .
With five minutes of the half remaining good wing play by Gordon beating two men cutting inside and squared the ball to SIMPSON who beat the keeper from 12 yards. Littlejohn to his credit wanted back into the fray so there was change at half time with Littlejohn teaming up with McDonald and Leslie going to left back and Beverley withdrawn.
Broomhill started the half with a strong wind at there backs and equalised on the hour mark from a corner kick with a piece of good fortune as when Littlejohn attacked the corner the ball came off the back of his head and into the net for 2-2. After some more substitutions Colony had a good 10 minute spell where they took the lead again with a decent move resulting in SIMPSON scoring his second. Broomhill lost a bit of discipline and had a player sent off for striking out at Watt. With 20 minutes to go Colony should have kicked on but it as the home side showing more desire and with only minutes remaining they grabbed an equaliser.
With Broomhill sensing Colony were on the ropes they went on to dominate and unsurprisingly grabbed a winner with five minutes remaining. A disappointed manager Alan Gordon said, “As sometimes happens the dismissal of a player makes a team play 10 per cent harder and we couldn’t match their commitment today. Too many players were off their game and we need to have all our guys on form to compete.”
