COLONY Park Juniors left it late to win their opening match of the PMac Division 1 (East) by two goals to one away to Sunnybank on Saturday.

The Inverurie side started the game well in difficult conditions facing a strong wind. They managed to force three corners in the opening four minutes and they had a chance when McDonald drove into the box and cut back for Dorrit but the ball bobbled as he was set to strike and forced a fresh air shot.

Sunnybank came into the game and in practically their first attack the ball fell to MILNE who struck an excellent shot into the corner of the Colony net to give Sunnybank an early lead after 6 minutes.

In 11 minutes Sunnybank had another chance following a corner but McGuinness cleared the danger. At this stage Sunnybank were on top and Duguid brought off good saves from a couple of Sunnybank chances.

Gradually Colony worked their way back into the game and Smith hit a great shot from the left edge of the box which the home keeper palmed to safety. Colony were now creating more by way of chances in the Sunnybank penalty area but in 33 minutes the home side looked to have increased their lead only for the assistant referee to flag for offside. Five minutes from half time a good run from Roddie set up Maitland who had a shot well blocked by the Sunnybank defence. At half time Sunnybank went in deservedly ahead with a one nil lead with Colony looking out of sorts in blustery condition.

At the start of the second Colony Park had an opportunity through Dorrit whose saved shot rebounded to Maitland and his shot was also saved. Colony were now pressing for an equaliser and Dorrit, McDonald and Roddie all had chances but the Sunnybank defence were able to clear.

In 63 minutes a well worked free kick by visitors saw a shot from Dorrit just going past the post. Three minutes later a good run and shot by McDonald beat the Sunnybank keeper only for the shot to hit the post and then Maitland rounded the Sunnybank keeper but his shot from and acute angle hit the side net.

Colony continued to attack and Dorrit had another shot blocked in 74 minutes. With around ten minutes to play Colony replaced Dorrit with Cooper. Colonys’ continuous pressure paid off when in 87 minutes they were awarded a penalty after Maitland was brought down in the box. From the spot Calvin RODDIE placed the ball in the corner of the Sunnybank net to equalise.

Because there had been a number of injuries in the second half there was a lengthy stoppage period beyond the ninety minute mark. In second minute of added time Cooper was through one on one with the Sunnybank keeper but his shot just went wide of the post. A couple of minutes later Sunnybank had a shot saved. Colony got a corner six minutes into stoppage time and from the corner kick Kevin BONARIUS forced the ball across the goal line to give Colony Park a very late lead and within a minute the referee blew for full time leaving Colony with a 2 1 win.

Overall this was a hard fought win for Colony Park in their first league match of the season.
