On a cold rainy Monday night at Harlaw Park it was Cove Rangers who deservedly went home with the full points in the opening Under 20 fixture of the season, beating Inverurie Locos 3-1.

Cove started with all guns blazing and not only took an early lead but had a goal disallowed and could have had a penalty.

Locos number nine Rhys Simpson tried to turn the tide but saw his shot expertly turned round the post by Craig Reid.

In 17 minutes Lewis Macaulay was left in space to meet a back post header from a cross on the left and beat Scott Mathieson to make it 2-0.

Ryan KEIR was the player looking most likely to spark a revival and he reduced the leeway in 26 minutes with an expertly flighted high cross come shot from the left.

However the two goal
lead was established in 37 minutes when Craig Mackie cut in from the left and despatched into Mathieson’s right corner

With the rain not abating both sets of youngsters
started to tire towards the break but within fifteen minutes of the restart Keir saw a strike from distance go just over then a Joe Burr left foot shot came off the top of the bar.

Cove also hit the woodwork and brought out a couple of fine saves from Mathieson but there was to be no further scoring

Locos: Mathieson, Laird, Pugh, Gee, Crisp, Littlejohn, Burr, Keir, Simpson, McCabe, Hay

Subs: Blair, Mitchell, Paterson, Ross

• This Saturday Inverurie Locos first team travel to Grant Park Street Park, Inverness to face a Clachnacuddin side on Highland League business.

The Locos desperately need their free date last Saturday with so many players injured while the Lilywhites suffered a 7-1 home defeat by Scottish Junior Cup holders Hurlford Utd in the William Hill Scottish Cup.

Ironically Hurlfords’ next opponents will be Locos at Harlaw Park on Saturday, October 4.
