Cup draw throws up plenty derby clashes

HIGHLAND League President Finley Noble and sponsors Breedon Aggregates Scotland CEO Alan Mackenzie conducted the draw for the Highland League Cup at the Garioch Sports Centre, Inverurie on Tuesday (January 22).

The draw resulted in many local derbys with Turriff United v Formartine United in one of two preliminary matches to be played on Saturday, March 2. In the first round proper Huntly face a trip to Harlaw Park to face Inverurie Locos while Rothes play neighbours Keith, Nairn meet Strathspey, Lossiemouth meet local rivals Buckie and there is a North of Scotland clash as Brora host Wick . The winners of the preliminary round of Clach v Cove meet Fortwilliam and the winner of the Turriff / Formartine clash have a trip to League Champions Forres to contend with.

One of the big talking points will be the meeting of neighbours Deveronvale and Fraserburgh whose Chairman Finley Noble commented, “This is just one of a number of exciting local derby matches where it is almost impossible to predict the outcome and will hopefully lead to the fans having a great days entertainment “.

Within minutes of the draw Inverurie Locos were advertising Hospitality Packages for the Huntly match which will take place on Saturday, March 16.
