Scottish Junior Cup holders Hurlford United sent Inverurie Locos spinning out of the William Hill Scottish Junior Cup on Saturday, winning 3-0, and they can confidently look forward to a Round Three home meeting with Stirling Albion.
Last year’s SHFL runners up were rated as the outsiders by the bookmakers taking into account fellow Highland League side Clach had been hit for seven in the opening round.
But with Neil Gauld and David Ross in the starting line up there was even greater attacking presence than in a side which had hit Forres for four, Marc Young and Ross Anderson dropping to the bench.
Locos were unlucky not to net in the first minute when Martin Bavidge released front partner Neil Gauld to slip under Alastair Brown but the offside flag went up.
However the Ayshire side took the lead in the eighth minute when midfielder Paul McKENZIE cut inside home left back and his well placed left foot shot went in off the left post of Andy Reid. It could have been a second within minutes but for Reid coming out of his goal to make a brilliant block at the feet of Stewart Kean.
At the other end, Dean Donaldson pressurised Brown into a long ball in the air, the keeper’s clearance only came to John Maitland. His lobbed in cross was headed over the top by Gauld.
In 21 minutes Jamie Wilson was lucky to escape with a yellow card in the centre circle area after aiming a kick at Neil McLean. A minute later the lead was doubled when Angus Cochrane’s cross from the left saw the Locos defence hesitating again, star striker Ross ROBERTSON’S header going across goal and bouncing into the roof of the net.
Ex senior player Stevie Masterton then forced Reid into another great save to his left at the expense of a corner following a long range free kick and then the bookings were evened up when Scott Begg’s name went into the book.
The home support were looking for their team to bounce out of the blocks but it was Hurlford who killed the game in the 50th minute, a cross from the right being missed by two players and Angus COCHRANE from the edge of the box side-footed expertly inside Reid’s left corner.
It was “gung ho” time now, Ross Anderson had replaced Still late in the first half and now it was three at the back with Maitland bolstering the midfield. Gauld saw an effort cleared off the line while Bavidge poked over after good lead up by Anderson and Donaldson.
It looked a big ask to get three goals and force a replay without even one goal being pulled back. Next it was Bavidge sending in a deep cross and Ross sending a looping header on to the roof of the net, before Brown made another save this time from McLean.
Brown was not for giving anything away, next he came out on Ross who was in on a pass by sub Jordan Leyden. And you know it’s one of those days when a Bavidge slow shot came off the outside of the post. Bav had an even later effort to score while Cochrane curled over.
Chance wise, plenty opportunities to win the tie but amateurish defending had always made it a catch up exercise.
