Ellon Academy Under 15s battled bravely but lost out 6-3 to Nicolson Institute in the final of the North of Scotland Cup in Dingwall.
The game kicked off at 4pm on Tuesday of last week at Victoria Park - the home of newly-promoted Ross County.
Nicolson opened strongly and took the lead in the eighth minute. Ellon nearly fell further behind but keeper Gibbon pulled off a magnificent save. However, a goal was only delayed and Nicolson moved two ahead in the 28th minute.
A minute later, Ellon were awarded a free kick in a dangerous area, but the shot was saved. Ellon’s James Bruce and David Coutts came close in the the 33rd and 34th minutes.
In the 40th minute, Ellon pulled one back through a stunning goal by Jasper Grasham.
Nicolson went further ahead in the 50th minute and added a fourth in the 61st minute.
Three minutes later, however, Ellon were awarded a penalty which was expertly taken by David Coutts reducing the deficit to 4-2. A minute later Nicolson made it five.
Ellon almost scored in the 83rd minute but did grab a third through David Coutts. But a goal for Nicolson in 88 minutes wrapped it up.
The Ellon team could take heart from the efforts of everyone. Later on they cheered Ellon Academy to success against Nicolson in the seniors’ North of Scotland Cup final.
