ELLON United’s inability to turn pressure into goals came back to haunt them when they lost 1-0 away to Banchory St Ternan in the Grill League Cup at the weekend.
It followed a similar story in the 3-1 defeat by FC Stoneywood in the competition’s opening game.
United started the brighter without managing to make their pressure count and were caught out in the 16th minute.
Ellon conceded a corner when a long ball looked to have been overhit and going behind for a goal kick. When they were unable to clear, Milne pounced to ram the ball home.
The home side came close to increasing their lead in the 28th minute when a free kick dipped wickedly and rebounded off the top of the crossbar.
United passed up a chance to equalise five minutes later when Matty Bremner met a free kick from Jonathon Millsom, only to see his header fly wide.
Ellon had the ball in the net at the start of the second half only to have Lenny Johnson’s effort ruled offside.
The visitors continued to push for an equaliser which should have arrived in the 80th minute only for Lenny Johnson to knock the ball wide. Mark Lawson came close in the 88th minute from a corner.
Ellon United: Steer, Millsom, Johnston, Whelan, Lawson, Allsop (Dunbar), Annand (Mathers), Bremner, Croll (Eadie), Johnson, Morrice, McNelis Stewart.
United are in Grill Cup action on Saturday with a trip to East End.
