Ellon hit the goal trail against Buckie Rovers

Ellon United completed their Grill League Cup section with a 7-2 home win over Buckie Rovers on Saturday.

It followed their 2-2 draw with Deveronside at the Meadows in the same competition last Tuesday night. With Banks o’ Dee having sealed the qualifying spot, the tie against Rovers had no bearing on the section, but served as important early season match practice.

United were forced to make an early change with Grant Thomson replacing the injured Chris Craib in midfield.

The home side opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Calum Annand fired across a dangerous free kick which was turned past his own keeper by a Buckie player.

Ellon doubled their lead in the 20th minute with Annand moving on to a corner from the left and drilling his shot beyond keeper Redford.

United had opportunities to increase their lead before going further ahead through Jordan Morrice’s 35th minute spot kick. They took only three minutes to add to their tally when Grant Thomson released Morrice and his low cross was turned home by Lenny Johnson.

United went five up within a minute of the restart with Thomson on hand to bundle home Morrice’s looping cross.

The home side made their second change in the 62nd minute with Johnson giving way for Ryan Stewart up front.

Five minutes later and United increased their advantage when Redford made a fine block to keep out Stewart, only for Ryan Rozanski to follow up to add number six.

Ellon went 7-0 up when Rozanski chipped the ball forward into the path of Stewart who lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper.

United were caught pushing forward three minutes later with Callum Steer managing to parry a fierce shot but Mark Wood followed up to open the visitors’ account.

A fine cutback from Callum Tremaine just failed to reach Blair Johnston. Buckie broke straight upfield with Wood hitting a shot whichcame back off the post.

Ellon made their final change in the 76th minute when Neil Erskine replaced Tremaine.

Buckie grabbed a second goal three minutes later when slackness from the home said allowed Kyle Gauld to work his way into a shooting position.
