University Strollers 3 - Ellon Amateurs 0

Ellon AFC entertained University Strollers at the Meadows in what could only be described as the proverbial six pointer with both teams deep in relegation trouble. With several Ellon players missing due to suspension and injury it was pleasing to see Paul Ironside make a welcome return to the Ellon fold.

Ellon reverted to a 3-5-2 formation mainly due to the personnel available and Alan Anderson was called upon to play as a trialist up front.

Strollers made the early running and only a great last ditch tackle by Urquhart prevented them going in front.

Ellon then started to press forward themselves with most of the danger being created by winger Thomson. Frst he set off on a run before laying the ball off to Dempster whose neat ball to Ironside ended up with keeper Anderson holding on to the strikers effort.

A Thomson corner was met by the powerful Urquhart but his well directed header was cleared off the line by Potter.

Ironside had a half chance from the angle of the box but his fierce strike went just over.

Having been penned back for a period University started to play a bit themselves with shots by Mackintosh then Farrar being well held by Dickinson in the Ellon goal.

But Ellon could not hold the visitors at bay and in 30 minutes a neat one two between Farrar and Williamson saw the latter stroke the ball into the bottom corner to put University one up.

Thomson continued to be Ellon’s main threat and from one of his crosses Ironside just failed to make contact at the back post.

Thomson then had a header on target himself as Ironside turned provider this time but keeper Anderson made an athletic stop.

The half finished with Ellon lucky just to be one down as a cross by Farrar found Holman all on his own inside the Ellon box but he headed over.

Ellon started the second half brightly with Birnie and Wilson both feeding Ironside but the chances went begging and as always happens they were to rue these chances as 22 minutes into the half up popped Williamson again to finish off a fine move and put the visitors two up.

Ellon decided to rest Anderson who had put in a fair shift up front and brought on the experienced Taylor.

A good move involving Ironside, Taylor and Thomson saw the young winger get a good effort on target but again the away keeper was up to the task.

A long ball from Dickinson was well controlled by Ironside who fed Thomson who fired past from just inside the box.

Taylor was proving a menace for the visitors in his unaccustomed role up front and he missed a great chance to get Ellon back in the game as a Thomson cross found him lurking at the post but he contrived to miss from 5 yards.

With 15 minutes left Ellon brought on Nicol for Sutherland.

Taylor almost atoned for this miss as he beat 3 defenders only to see his effort saved.

With five minutes remaining Strollers killed the game off as Holman stabbed home the visitors third after an untidy scramble in the Ellon box.

Final score 3-0 in favour of University Strollers

With limited resources Ellon battled hard but the visitors were the better team and took their chances well.

If Ellon had taken theirs then it might have been a different outcome. But this result really leaves Ellon’s Division one status in some doubt and something dramatic will have to change if they are to stay up.
