ELLON United stretched their winning run to four matches with a narrow 1-0 victory over FC Stoneywood at the Meadows on Saturday.

A fairly even contest saw United edge through thanks to Paul Leahy’s second half strike.

With little to choose between the sides it was Ellon who created the better openings and they were rewarded at the start of the second half. The home side defended well to hold on to their advantage.

United conceded a rash free kick in the seventh minute but Cromar shot well over. Ellon hit back with Callum Dunbar forcing a save from keeper Scott

The home side came close to opening the scoring in the 14th minute when Mark Lawson met a corner from Jordan Morrice only to see his header cleared off the line.

Ellon kept up the pressure with Leahy just failing to finish off a corner from Calum Annand.

Stoneywood forced a free kick in the 32nd minute but Stainer blasted the ball aganist the Ellon wall. Three minutes later a free kick from Cromar was cleared by United striker Dunbar.

Ellon took only three minutes into the second half to snatch the lead. A long throw from Dunbar caused the initial damage with the front post head flick forced home by Leahy.

Stoneywood won a free kick on the quarter hour mark but Goodbrand’s shot went straight to Callum Steer in the United goal.

Ellon survived a scary moment in the 75th minute when a Stoneywood corner was met at the back post but headed just wide. A Stoneywood attack in the 85th minute came to nothing when Stainer blazed his shot well over the bar.

Ellon countered four minutes later with Dunbar firing over a cross which flew across the face of the visitors’ goal with no one able to get a touch.

With 90 minutes on the clock a cross from Annand picked out Dunbar whose shot beat keeper Scott only to come back off the far post. United saw out the closing stages to earn a welcome, if rare, win over their Polo Park opponents.
