Nairn County 4 Formartine United 1

Formartine United’s unbeaten league record came to an abrupt end at Station Park on Saturday.

The Pitmedden side played for around an hour with 10 men after midfielder Gary Clark was sent off, but were already two goals down by that stage.

Cammy Keith pulled one back, however Nairn went on to add two more. Brora now sit top of the league on goal difference from United with 27 points, but have played a game less.

Nairn took the lead in the ninth minute. Duncanson skipped a couple of tackles and fired in a low shot which evaded keeper Shearer.

The visitors suffered a major blow in the 23rd minute when they lost a second goal and were reduced to 10 men.

Napier appeared to be pushed in the back and bundled over with possession going to County’s Gethins. The referee brushed aside Formartine complaints and Gethins ran on to score. Clark was red-carded for protesting too strongly.

Gethins almost made it 3-0 shortly after but sent his effort straight at Shearer.

Formartine regrouped and brought on Bagshaw, a midfielder, to replace Jeffrey, a defender.

They kept plugging away and got their reward just before the hour mark with Cammy Keith grabbing his 19th of the season, turning in a Munro cross.

This stung Nairn into action and they increased their lead seven minutes later. Leslie burst down the right and evaded Hamill and Smith before cutting back for Gethins to make it 3-1.

Formartine still weren’t finished and over the next ten to fifteen minutes kept pressing with Napier and McKeown to the fore. It failed to produce another goal but it did show their fighting spirit.

However, they lost a fourth goal near the end - in comic fashion. Bagshaw passed to the ever-sharp Gethins in the six-yard area and he slipped the ball to Leslie who had the simple task of finding the net.

So it was back to earth for United after last weekend’s high of winning the Aberdeenshire Cup. They are at home to Buckie Thistle on Saturday. Kick-off is 2pm. Teams:
