United close in on title

FORMARTINE United forged ahead at the top of the Highland League with a vital 3-1 win over Clachnacuddin at Grant Street on Wednesday night.

They have opened up a three-point gap on rivals Cove Rangers but, crucially, have a game in hand. United have four matches left while Cove have three.

Manager Steve Paterson acknowledged it was a vital win and hailed a great team performance.

Formartine took the lead in the fourth minute when Callum Dingwall knocked in the rebound after Campbell saved Bagshaw’s penalty.

Free-scoring Mike Ewen added a second in the 64th minute when he curled a superb shot from 20 yards past the helpless Campbell.

Minutes later they added a third through Webster, who fired home from close range. Milne grabbed a consolation for Clach near the end with a glancing header.

Formartine, who need seven points from their remaining games to lift the title, face Forres Mechanics at home on Saturday with a 3pm kick-off
