ELLON United lost out 2-1 to league champions Hermes in their McBookie.com McLenman Cup semi-final at The Meadows on Wednesday, May 16.
United snatched an early lead when Lewis Forbes took advantage of a rare mistake by keeper Sweeny, who failed to deal with Ross Forsyth’s looping high cross. United continued to battle gamely against their physically stronger visitors, holding out up to the interval without managing to put together any sustained spells of possession or pressure.
The second half continued as the first, with United fighting hard to contain Hermes. However, it was the home side who passed up a good chance to give themselves a vital two goal cushion, when Ross forsyth met a cross from the left only to direct his header off target.
Hermes made their breakthrough midway through the second half after a goal from Wilson. The visitors then took the lead six minutes later, through a fine strike from Hamilton.
United rung changes, but never really looked like managing to get the goal back which would have equalised, and, indeed, they might have gone 3-1 down in the last minute but for a fine penalty save from keeper Ross Buchanan.
United’s next match is away to Stonehaven, which will be followed by their final away game to Culter on Friday, May 31, kick off at 7.15pm.
