GARIOCH Gymnastics Club, based at the Garioch Community Centre in Inverurie, took part in the most prestigious of the Scottish Gymnastics Competitions last weekend – the Scottish National Championships at the Bells Sports Centre, Perth.
Five gymnasts (all part of Garioch’s Senior Elite squad), travelled to Perth with their coaches – Janine Robertson and Emily Bull - to compete in the events.
The All-round and Team event took place on the Saturday and the Apparatus Finals on the Sunday.
Jessie Smith, 15 from Collieston, took part in the Senior Event. Beth McCaw, 14 from Kingswells, and Kerry Smith, 13 from Collieston, in the Junior Section and Izzy Tolometti, 12 from Alford and Alix Still, 11 from Kemnay in the Espoir Age Group.
Garioch were the only club from the North of Scotland represented in the Women’s Artistic section of the Championships and the girls performed extremely well.
In fact, the Garioch club had their most successful National Championships ever – they were the only club in the whole competition to win Overall and Apparatus medals in every age group, where every gymnast entered qualified for every Apparatus Final they were eligible for, and Garioch won the Team Silver award, beaten only by the City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club.
These achievements are made even more admirable by the fact that the Garioch team were the only gymnasts competing who do not train in a full time gymnastics facility, or have regular access to one.
