Freeze puts spotlight on national side
Frozen out: The heavy frost put paid to sporting fixtures across the country. Ellons game at Langholm was one of the casualties, allowing the team to watch the Scotland - England international instead.
THE wipeout of club rugby as a consequence of the weather resulted in a full, but merciless focus on Scotland’s first game in the Six Nations tournament.
Unfortunately the national side chose to deliver a shocker against of all sides, the Auld Enemy who despite winning the oldest international fixture in the book were no great shakes in an appalling game of rugby.
Long suffering supporters must surely be asking what the players did in their two weeks of preparation for the game. Practice unforced errors?
We have surely put to bed the idea that stand off Dan Parks is fit for purpose. For coach Andy Robinson, Dan is no longer the man after his second half gaffe.
Significantly, things improved after Parks was replaced by young Edinburgh player Greg Laidlaw, even if it was too late to make amends for the earlier flawed performance.
The agony for North - East supporters was not just in having to watch the game, but all that is entailed in an expensive trip to Edinburgh, including the prices the SRU inflict on them to watch poor fare.
On this form Scotland will be lucky to avoid the ignomy of collecting the mythical wooden spoon, and this after one game in the tournament.
Long time supporter of the game John Mackie from Ellon was in no doubt about the status of the national side. “This was just rubbish against a very limited English side. I won’t be going back to Murrayfield. It’s the end for me. Have we no pride in performance,” said the 67 year old.
The final score of 13 - 6 was in fact flattering, even if in Dave Denton the Scottish 21 year old number eight was adjudged to be man - of - the match.
Once again the Scots failed to score a try, a habit that has become catching under Robinson, and not acceptable to the faithful.
In the meantime Ellon were left kicking their heels after the game at Langholm was called off Friday, leaving the squad free to watch the Murrayfield debacle.
