Frost stops play for Ellon Rugby Club
ELLON were once again left cursing the winter weather after their eagerly anticipated game with league leaders Musselburgh was called off on Saturday due to heavy frost at the Meadows.
“The ground was rock solid. There is no way we could have played a game, but it’s most frustrating, especially as it was such a key game for us. We had trained hard and well and was looking forward to taking on the top team in National League 1,” said Ellon head coach Mike Avis, who will now have to build his side up for the trip to the Border country on Saturday when the Meadows men meet Langholm.
“We are above them in the league, and beat them convincingly earlier in the season. A double would be good, but they will be a different kettle of fish down there,” he said.
Langholm managed a game at the weekend, making home advantage pay when they eased past Edinburgh University 14 - 5. The game will be another test of character on the road for an Ellon side who have only played two games since December 3, but one they must win if they are to stay in contention for a coveted top four place in the division.
“A defeat would not be a disaster for us, though these are the games we have to take in our stride,” said Colin Tennant the club president.
The key league match will be played prior to the Six Nations opener for Scotland who will need no motivating against a young England side keen to put behind them a disastrous World Cup.
Indeed both sides will have points to make after poor campaigns, though many will have forgotten that the English are in fact the current Six Nations champions, if not favourites for this year’s tournament. Scotland must get off to a good start what with having three games away from home, and a testing encounter with France to come at Murrayfield later in the month.
The French may well be the strong favourites for the title, especially after its stirring performance in the final of the World Cup where with a bit of luck could well have beaten the All Blacks. Scotland cannot be written off, though, and with a winning start could yet prove to be worthy of the considerable coaching skills of Andy Robinson, but if you are looking for a good bet go with the Irish who will also have a point to make, but haven’t they all, including the Welsh who continue to whine about getting a poor decision in the World Cup, which they reckon cost them a place in the final.
