INTERNATIONALLY-renowned course architect and former Ryder Cup player, Dave Thomas, is to take a trip down memory lane this Saturday when he returns to Newmachar Golf Club to open its new clubhouse extension.

The building incorporates a new office, meeting room, toilets and a significantly larger professional shop.

The new addition will bring the club’s facilities up to a standard matching that of its courses.

Dave Thomas’s association with Newmachar Golf Club goes back to the mid-80s, when he was commissioned to design the championship standard Hawkshill course which opened in 1990 .

Following its success, he later returned to design the club’s second course, Swailend, which opened in 1997.

These add to a worldwide portfolio of well over 100 courses that Dave has designed in the years following an illustrious career as a professional golfer.

This Saturday, he will return again to Newmachar to receive a tour of the courses, before cutting the ribbon at an official ceremony to mark the opening of the new facilities.

John McIntosh, chairman of Newmachar Golf Club said: “We are delighted with our new facilities and hope that it will enhance the facilities for members, visitors and corporate clients.

“Hawkshill is a championship course that we are very proud of and for that we owe a huge amount of thanks to Dave Thomas.

“ We are looking forward to welcoming him back to see the progression of the two courses that he designed and to officially open our new extension.”

Newmachar Golf Club, which is famous for its affiliation with Paul Lawrie, who represented the club when he won the British Open in 1999, is one of the most popular golf venues in the North-east, with more than 35,000 rounds played each year.

It has hosted a number of national events, including the Scottish Open for the European Senior Tour and PGA Scottish Professional Championships.

Andrew Cooper, PGA Professional of Newmachar Golf Club , said: “The extra space in the shop is great. It has allowed us to increase our product range and display it in an attractive manner.

“That aside, we have aimed to create an experience that is welcoming and friendly for visitors and allows golfers to relax ahead of their round.

“Many of our members have commented on how amazing the shop looks and our new coffee machine is going down well, particularly with members popping in after playing nine holes! It’s a great environment to work in.”

The official opening will take place at 10.30am on Saturday. For further details call 01651 863002.

Meanwhile, thirteen clubs in the North-east are among 60 clubs and facilities offering a camp this summer through a new venture with the national junior golf programme, ClubGolf.

Hundreds of children across Scotland will take part in the inaugural ClubGolf Camps, launched by European Tour golfer Scott Jamieson, with the help of golfing footballers, Scott Brown and Steven Whittaker.

Alford, Craibstone, Elgin, Forres, Inchmarlo, Inverallochy, Meldrum House, Moray, Newburgh on Ythan, Tarland, Westhill, and Murcar Links clubs are all running Camps.
