ELLON’S sports centre announced a bumper turnout last week, following the facility’s Open Day event.
The Meadows, which has recently refurbished its gym, took in visitors from across the area, with 44 signing up for membership at the new gym. The facility, which is now in its 21st year of operation, is the second largest sports facility in Aberdeenshire, and hosts many of the area’s teams.
Chairman of the Meadows trust Jack Nixon told the Times that the response had been ‘encouraging’, despite extensive cuts to the facility’s budget as part of local government austerity plans.
“It was a most encouraging response from the public of Ellon and area,” he said. “We can build on this kind of day. I am particularly encouraged by the backing we have received from the Trust Clubs.”
He was coy about the future, though, saying: “here is a long way to go before the future of the centre is assured, but I am confident we shall go from strength to strength with the backing of the community.”
The Trust also enjoyed a burst of community support, including the backing of local councillors and community councillors.
Cllr Gillian Owen said: “The Meadows is the jewel in the sports facilities of the area. I am privileged to be associated with the developments there.”
Meanwhile, Ellon Community Council were also happy to see the centre prosper. “I am delighted to see the Meadows making progress,” said Community Council Chairwoman Moira Muir. “We are 100 per cent behind its astonishing progress over the last 20 years. Long may it continue.”
