Organisers of last weekend’s open day at Ellon’s McDonald Golf Club have hailed the day as a success, after attracting a large number of new members to the club.
Large numbers of families took full advantage of the clubs facilities, including a special ‘chipping’ area for beginners to try out clubs, and a driving area, under the supervision of club professionals Sandy Aird and Michele Thomson. Elsewhere, candyfloss and ice cream was on offer, while face painting and hair braiding was available within the clubhouse.
However, it was the large increase in memberships which surprised the club. Taking advantage of a special joining rate available only on the day, a total of sixty-eight new members signed up. The membership increase was across all categories, from juniors to men, women, playing and social memberships.
Speaking afterwards, McDonald Golf Club Vice-Captain Bill Moir declared himself pleased with how the day had gone.
“All things considered, we’re really pleased with how things went, especially considering how the weather was”, he said. “The weather was a little frustrating, but people still enjoyed themselves, which is the main thing.
“This was our third open day here at the club, and each one has been a success”, he continued. “Obviously, we’re delighted with the increase in membership. However, we want people to know that we’re here as a community facility as well as a golf club, and on that front, I think we succeeded in getting that message across to a large number of people at the open day.
The club will be holding its Championship finals this coming Saturday (2 July), with the finals taking place across all categories. Spectators are welcome, and there will be a barbeque at night, along with entertainment from band ‘Groove Cruise’. The club will also be holding it’s annual Pro-Am event on Friday 29 July.
