A YOUNG Ellon swimmer is fast making her mark in national competition.

Beth Armour, 14, won her age group at the 5k Scottish Open Water Swimming Championships held at Loch Venachar between Callander and Brig o’Turk on Saturday.

In June, she won a 2k open swim event at Strathclyde Park and now has her eye on another title at Loch Morlich in a few week’ time.

Beth is a member of, and coached by, Aberdeen Amateur Swimming Club and has been swimming for around seven years.

She was among 40 competitors in the Scottish Gas-sponsored event at Loch Venachar and was top in her age group.

The Ellon Academy pupil said: “The weather was not great but I really enjoy open swimming and was delighted with the trophy and medal I won.

“It was much tougher than the 2k event in June but I put in a lot of training in the pool each week.”

Her parents are proud of their daughter’s achievements.

Mum Susan said: “Beth is really keen on swimming and we try to encourage her. When you know how much she enjoys it then it’s all worthwhile.”

Beth, who will go into third year when the new school session gets under way later this month, said the open swim season from June to September - when the water temperature is bearable - keeps her fit before she starts back in the indoor pool.
