JUNIOR golf in Ellon has been give a major boost with the official opening of a new practice area.
The facility at the town’s McDonald Golf Club, costing around £25,000, was declared open for business on Sunday by former captain Dave Heap and Carole Gerrard, whose late husband Graham was a former club secretary.
The two officials played a major role in securing financial backing for the practice ground.
The development was assisted by a grant of nearly £10,000 from Lottery Awards for All, and support from Ellon Rotary Club and local contractor Jim Jamieson. The initiative was started by Club Golf, which aims to get all juniors under nine to try the sport.
Club administrator Sandra Brockie said: “That was how the practice area came about.
“We have about 120 junior members and the whole idea is to promote this for younger members and try to get them started earlier.
The practice area has a large green, bunker and four flags.
