An Ellon brother and sister are celebrating a double golfing success.

Stephen and Megan Roger have won the junior championships at the McDonald club.

It is the first time that a brother and sister have won the respective titles at Ellon in the same year. Stephen, 16, plays off scratch at Cruden Bay and his away club is Ellon.

He took up the game just three years ago and practises every day, even during school lunch-breaks in the winter.

The Ellon Academy sixth year pupil won the North East Boys Stroke-play Championship this summer and went on to win the North East Boys Match-play Championship.

He was selected to play for the North East District boys team again this year and for the NE District Youths Team in August. Stephen was also in the NE Men’s team in September at only 16.

Megan, who is newly 15, is a home member at Ellon and has reduced her handicap from 32 to 19 over the last two seasons. She is in S4 at Ellon Academy and admits she does not practise as much as her brother, preferring to play a few holes or a full round.

Mum Mandy, who was a defeated finalist in the ladies’ championship at Ellon this year, is delighted with their achievements.

She said: “I am so proud of them for winning their finals this year - two out of three isn’t bad!”

Stephen and Megan picked up their awards at the club’s annual prize-giving ceremony earlier this month.
