Ellon Rugby Club got their 2016/17 season underway with a bonus point win over a Deeside team which started the match with just 13 players and ended it with only 11 following injuries.

The result takes The Meadows side to the top of BT Caledonia League Division 2 North (East) after week one, leading Banff in second place on merit of points scored.

Despite starting the match with two fewer players, Deeside got the first score on the bored and converted to lead 7-0.

Ellon pegged their visitors back to 7-7 and Deeside managed to hold onto this score until around the half hour mark when Ellon started to cross the line frequently.

The match ended 48-7, securing all five points for the home side.

Next up for Ellon will be the visit of Banff this Saturday, who beat Shetland up in Lerwick by a score of 32-7 at the weekend.

This will be followed by home and away fixtures with Garioch, Shetland and Aberdeen Grammar 2nd XV before the league is split and Ellon face three new teams from BT Caledonia League Division 2 North (West).
