Ellon bowlers retain Buchan County trophy

Holders Ellon Bowling Club met New Deer in the Buchan County Top 10 Final at the Rosehearty Club on Saturday.

Last year’s winners had defeated Monquhitter, Invercairn and New Pitsligo to reach the final and New Deer had accounted for Fraserburgh, Strichen and Fraserburgh West End to book their cup final berth.

Ellon made a bright start to the final with Willie Christie and Gary Simpson racing to a 10-1 lead against Maurice Burden and Davie Anderson in the pairs. The Ellon triple of Derek Jobson, Charlie Singer and Craig Dinnes managed to then start to get in front of their New Deer rivals whose triple was Billy Anderson, Jim Cowie and Liz Fraser.

First off the green was the single with Ian Milne from New Deer taking a close 21-15 victory against Mike Stephen. The way the match was going across the board meant that the Ellon man was happy with a narrow defeat. T

he Ellon pairs recorded an excellent 24-9 victory and this was sweet revenge for Willie Christie who was defeated by Davie Anderson last weekend at the Ellon Super Six Tournament.

Ellon secured another two points when the triples finished up 20-11 winners. With only the fours left on the green Ellon had the luxury of knowing that their superior shots difference would give them victory overall.

However, the Ellon four of Grant Campbell, Alistair Spence, Robin Jack and Phil Anderson drew 15-15 with New Deer’s Les Fraser, Doug Elrick, Sandy Elrick and Martin Wilson to give Ellon a 5-3 overall win.

Ellon will now represent Buchan County in next year’s national inter-county top 10. Ellon bowler Charlie Singer kept up his incredible record in the competition winning all of his matches last season and then repeating the feat again this year.

Ellon Club President, Phil Anderson, said: “It was a great team effort and every player from Ellon played their part in this success for the club.

“It’s great that we will be representing the county in the national competition next season in what will be Ellon Bowling Club’s centenary season.”

The draw for next season’s competition takes place next month and among the teams that Ellon could face are A&K Champions Rothienorman and Bon Accord winners Northern.
