Ellon Bowling Club hosted their annual super six tournament at the weekend sponsored by local firm, Phil Anderson Financial Services.

The competition started on Friday evening with Peterhead emerging victorious in their section to qualify for Sunday’s semi-final. The action on Saturday was very competitive and the holders, New Deer, squeezed through to the knock-out stages along with Grant Campbell’s “Young Guns” side.

The match of the day on Saturday was a closely contested singles tie between New Deer’s former Scottish Singles Champion David Anderson and Westhill’s current District Junior Singles champion Andrew Thomson.

In a very close tie it was Anderson that came out on top winning on the last end to defeat his younger opponent by 1 shot. The final group stage was held on Sunday morning and going into the last set of matches the sponsors team which consisted of all players from Ellon were locked on 8 points along with Mike Stephen’s “All Stars” side and the Ellon Ladies team. Despite Stephen’s side defeating Stuartfield 6-0 it was the Phil Anderson Financial Services side that made the semi-final with a last-gasp 6-0 victory against the Ellon Ladies.

It looked like the tournament favourites (All Stars) were heading through until Craig Dinnes produced the shot of the tournament to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against the Ellon Ladies. A count of six at the last end was enough to win the match and send the sponsors through on shot difference to the semi-final.

The draw for the semi-final pitted New Deer against Phil Anderson Financial Services and Peterhead against the Young Guns. The sponsors side won through to the final with a comfortable 6-0 victory against New Deer and the Young Guns’s recorded a 4-2 victory against Peterhead with wins in the singles and triples.

In the final the sponsors side made a great start against the Young Guns with Phil Anderson and Craig Dinnes making a storming start in the pairs against Ally Mitchell and Grant Campbell. Experience told in the end as the Ellon pair ran out comfortable 25-7 winners and secure 2 points for their team. The sponsors triple also made a great start in their match and Jim Elrick, Arthur Robertson and David Stephenson were always in control against the Young Guns Lisa Reilly, Martyn Thomson and Andrew Reilly. The match of the tournament came in the singles match in the final. Gary Simpson from the sponsors side put in a brilliant display to defeat Andrew Thomson 21-19.
