ELLON’S reward for their hard-fought win against Caithness in the last game of the league has earned the Meadows side a place in the three team play-offs to see who fills the last place in Caley Division 1.
The play-offs get under way on Saturday with Ellon facing a difficult trip to Inverurie where they meet old rivals Garioch, prompting former president of the club Archie Park to say: ”This is like going back to our roots. We have had many a fine battle with our Garioch friends over the years, though it’s ages since we met them in a competitive match. If the team can’t get fired up for this one they shouldn’t be putting on an Ellon jersey.”
Garioch reached the play off stages via its great run in Caley 2 North which they won with considerable ease to the delight of club stalwart Pete Thomson.
He said: “It’s just what we needed a game against old foes Ellon will get the boys fired up. I fancy our chance, especially as the game is at Inverurie.”
The third team in the section will be the winners of the Glenrothes versus Grangemouth tie.
The winners of this all Midlands game will have to travel to the Meadows on May 4 when the section will be decided. Garioch meet the Midlands winners the previous Saturday away from home.
Ellon flanker Jack Calvert said: “It has been a very difficult season, but we finished on a high against Caithness and if we can carry this form into the play off games we’ll be fine,”
