For the second consecutive year Ellon will be faced with Caledonian Division 1 play offs after Mackie FP’s dramatically saved themselves by winning its last game at Forfar where Strathmore, last week’s conquerors of Ellon were the opponents.
The close game saw the visitors easing through 13 - 11, to move two points above Ellon who along with bottom side St Andrews University will play in the four team play offs later in the month.
Ellon coach, Ryan Morrice said: “We are disappointed to find ourselves in the playoffs again this season. Despite this the players are in a positive mood.
“The guys know what it takes to get through this from the experience last season.
“Also, after losing to Garioch at this stage last year, motivation shouldn’t be an issue.”
Ellon captain, Nicki Fraser, added: “This means that for the second time in two years we will be playing our local rivals Garioch, but that’s fine we will back ourselves to beat all three teams. Mind you we had hoped Strathie would do us a favour and beat Mackie last weekend. It’s now up to us to go and prove we are in a false position.”
The draw for the matches will be made this week, but complicated by the fact that Glenrothes has still three games to play in its bid to qualify for the play offs.
Ellon could face repeat fixtures against Garioch, April 12, and Glenrothes, April 19, should Glenrothes secure second place in Caley 2 Midlands in their remaining three games to deny Harris Academy FPs a chance of promotion.
