An ELLON triathlete is making plans for an important date next summer. David Horne will be a member of the GB team taking part in the European Championships in Turkey.

David, 41, qualified in the male veteran 40-44 age group following an impressive performance at a recent event in the Central Belt.

He took part in the GE Strathclyde Park Triathlon (Standard Distance) and finished third.

The race doubled up as the Scottish Triathlon Standard Distance Championships and also the GB team qualifiers for the European Championships at Alayna in Turkey on June 15 and 16 next year.

David, who lives in Ellon and is a member of Ythan Cycling Club, is comparatively new to the triathlon, taking it up just a year ago.

He told the Times: “I’m really looking forward to taking part in next summer’s championships.

“It’s a great sense of achievement to qualify for the GB team.”

David, a subsea project engineer, said he will now have plenty to focus on over the winter months.

He added: “I really enjoy the triathlon. If you train hard the opportunities are there. You can do well in your age group and find yourself rubbing shoulders with the elite.” David’s achievement was praised by Ythan Cycling Club chairman Colin Allanach.

He said: “We are all delighted for David. He has not been a member for long but he has come on leaps and bounds.

“We will be watching his progress with interest.”

The triathlon is an endurance discipline involving swimming, cycling and running.
