Ellon youngsters get mauling from Morgan Academy

A YOUNG Ellon team failed to do themselves justice in their league opener on Saturday as they went down 66-7 to Morgan Academy FPs, writes Jack Calvert.

Despite showing potential in training all week, the team put on a woeful performance in Dundee, much to the confusion of coach Ryan Morrice.

Morrice said: “We had a shocker!

“Our defence didn’t function at all. I never saw that coming as they trained really well all week.

“I was expecting a tough game and we made the point to the players not to underestimate them.

“Everything looked good in the warm-up and the players looked in the mood, but it just didn’t happen for us.

“I’ll reflect on it over the next day or two then look at what we can do to rectify it.”

Ellon’s only points came through experienced brothers Phil and Ally Edwards - hooker Ally scoring a try and centre Phil converting.

Many of the rest of the team are youngsters stepping up from the club’s under 18 side, but Morrice believes his squad has the pedigree to make it in Caley 1.

He said: “I think we do. We have a very young side.

“There were six players 19 or under in the side today. Openside flanker Alex Budge was making his debut at 17- years-old.

“Apart from Phil and Ally the rest of the side are in their early 20s and they are learning all the time.

“This was a harsh lesson to take, but we will lick our wounds and pick them up at training and build towards the Glenrothes game on Saturday.

“It is just going to take them time to gel. At the end of the day it’s one game and we are looking for a reaction from the players at training this week.”

Ellon’s first Caley 1 home game of the season kicks-off at 3pm at The Meadows on Saturday.
