Izzy is crowned the Best of Garioch at awards event

An awards ceremony to celebrate the communities, staff and young people across Aberdeenshire and their achievements, successes and diligence was held by Aberdeenshire Council’s Education and Children’s Services on Friday, (June 13).

The Inspiring Aberdeenshire awards recognise individuals that have made an outstanding contribution to education, learning or leisure within their area.

Winning the Best of Garioch category was the North-east’s most decorated female gymnast and Alford Academy pupil Izzy Tolometti.

Izzy trains for 22 hours a week with Garioch Gymnastics Club in Inverurie and at the weekend she’s away in Largs training with the Scottish squad.

She has been involved with the national squad for three years and this year moved up to the national performance squad where she now trains with the Commonwealth Games 2018 hopefuls.

She previously represented Scotland at several events including three internationals and was also part of the bronze medal-winning Scottish team at the UK School Games in Sheffield last year.

Sports Officer Janine Robertson said: “Her success is mainly down to her attitude towards training and determination to succeed. She enjoys learning new skills, especially those that others cannot do, but is always determined to practise and perfect them.”

She aims to be selected for the Scottish team that takes part in the Northern European Championships and to compete in the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
