ELLON Gordon made the worst possible start to the defence of their Grade 1 title, crashing to new boys 2nd Ronalds by 79 runs.
The defeat was made all the worse by the game having to be transferred from Sheddocksley to Ellon due to a wrongly marked pitch.
Not for the first time in recent years Aberdeen City Council groundsmen have displayed a total ignorance of the markings required for cricket.
Ellon Gordon captain Scott White said: “It was a strange situation, but having had the switch we really should have cashed in, but it’s early days. We bowled and fielded well enough, but did not seriously threaten their total of 150.” Ellon were dismissed for a paltry 71.
White was the only home player to come out of the game with his head held high, taking four wickets for 36 and top scoring with 29 when his side batted.
Ellon Gordon are at home again this weekend when White’s under performing charges will have the chance to make amends against Mannofield who got their campaign off to a flying start with a comprehensive 100-run win. Splendid knocks from Grant Jamieson and Willie Anderson both of whom have experience of playing in national league cricket ensured the win against Aberdeen GSFP.
